Hi, I’m back and forth between Harpex and the ATK for Reaper binaural decoder. With the ATK plugin I find that the CIPIC 11 HRTF works well for me, better than any of the responses from the Listen set. With Harpex, I always have to set the “EQ method to None”, if not the sound gets badly coloured. Harper has more distinct localisation , while ATK has better immersion. As I work towards installations that will be using speakers in a room, I find it useful to switch back and forth, it’s a bit like switching between different pairs of speakers while miksing.
As for the most convincing I have experienced, that was a demo at Ville Pullki’s lab in Helsinki, using Dirac and head tracking. They were playing AB tests for me in an anechoic chamber, going back and forth between external speakers and binaural. Along the way I was convinced that they were playing tricks with me, playing all of it from the speakers. Gradually I started noticing that if froze the position of my head, the sound would suck inwards after a second or so, disrupting the realistic illusion added by head-tracking. So, needless to say I have jumped the NEOH bandwagon at Kickstarter, and hope for an SDK.
