One issue is the difficulty of making the capsules sufficiently near to
coincident.  Another might be the special calibration required.

If an omni and two figure of eight microphones are used, corresponding
to W, X, and Y, these can be effectively set up in a simple arrangement
for planar-only use, with the capsules stacked vertically - often
referred to as "native B-format".  There is a description here:
