I have an old Oktava MK-012 4D. I got it on eBay about two years ago, but from the serial number I think it's about 15 years old. The sound quality is very smooth, we'll suited to classical music. But..., and there is a 'but'..., the sound localization is not good; it is hard to identify a direction from which a sound comes. The sound directionality is 'blurred' (I can't think of a better word to describe it). With the Oktava cardioid capsules, which appear to be the smallest of the capsules that will fit onto the 4D body, the capsules form a sphere of about 96-98 mm diameter. By comparison, the Brahma Ambisonic mic's capsules form a sphere not much more than 20 mm diameter. The Brahma has much better localization. I have had the Oktava recalibrated and specific impulse response filters made for my mic, but it cannot completely fix the problem caused by the large diameter. I'm sure others on this list can give a proper explanation of why this limitation applies. In summary, the Oktava MK-012 4D sounds good, as good as Oktava MK-012's are reputed to sound. But as an Ambisonic mic it is rather limited. Gerard Lardner
