I'm not an expert, and others on the list could much better answer your
question. But as far as I know, irregular arrays like the new IMAX 12.0
are not well suited for ambisonics reproduction. There's at least one
tool to create decoders for irregular arrays, depending on the exact
positions of the speakers in the room, in relation to a sweet spot.
But then you would need a custom decoder for each IMAX room...
I'm thinking about The Ambisonic Decoder Toolkit:
https://bitbucket.org/ambidecodertoolbox/adt.git. 
Maybe the author (Aaron Heller) would have more to say about it.

Another option is to use 12 virtual microphones (for example using
SurroundZone2); that would be the easiest. Even if it would not be the
most accurate method (in terms of ambisonics reproduction), it could
be appropriate.
