Thanks to everyone for the input here...very useful

I can confirm that it was an original ST250 with the supplied control unit,
the switch "B" was not disengaged at any point, and yes there was no
evidence of signal on the YZ channels until right before it decided to
start working again; with bits of crackle and noise, then actual audio. I
had tested the unit the night before in an air conditioned room, and it was
fine. To my recollection, the unit went straight from that nice cool room
to about 32°C with 88% humidity. It was an old mic/box as it was, so I
don't imagine it would have taken well to that kind of treatment.
