We seek proposals for PhD research which explore the creative potentials of the
latest immersive artistic technologies – spatial audio, photogrammetry, film,
VR etc. – to address environmental concerns, bringing together audio-visual
aesthetics to articulate with findings from environmental science.
While new creative technologies have multiplied and become more accessible
during the last few years, the aesthetic potential of these new tools remains
in its infancy. Equally, the complexity of global environmental issues and the
specificity of datasets can make it difficult to communicate the urgency of
problems and the necessity for action.
We seek proposals that employ practice research methodologies to interrogate
and critically reflect upon the affordances of these new tools and
technologies, while exploring their potential to create meaningful experiences
which enhance public engagement with and education about significant
environmental issues.
We expect sound to constitute a significant component of the research, with the
candidate seeking to capitalise on the unique facilities afforded the
SOUND/IMAGE Research group – Loudspeaker Orchestra, IKO, Eigenmike, Stephen
Lawrence Gallery – and it’s close partnership with fellow research clusters:
CAPTIVATE – LIDAR, Photogrammetry; VIRTUAL FILM PRODUCTION & SIMULATION HUB –
high-end film, 360º filmmaking, VR, AR, simulation interfaces.
Applied Outputs of the research might include – Spatial Audio Compositions,
Immersive Environments, 360º Films, Installations with external partners in
public spaces.
Candidates should be passionate about environmental issues and the potential of
the latest digital arts to create engaging and affective experiences.
Proposals should address:
- Any conceptual approaches you’d like to explore and their articulation
through practice.
- Potential sources of Environmental data you’d like to work with.
- Possible outputs from the project (creative works and/or written)
Funding:
In addition, the successful candidate will receive a contribution to tuition
fees equivalent to the university’s Home rate, currently £4,500 (FT) or
pro-rata (PT), for the duration of their scholarship. International applicants
will need to pay the remainder tuition fee for the duration of their
scholarship. This fee is subject to an annual increase.
