Let me suggest an alternative to both DesqView and OS/2: The TSX-32
multi-user/multi-tasking operating system. The TSX kernel runs
exclusively in 32-protected mode and makes full use of 328 memory
management. TSX runs most DOS applications including WordPerfect,
dBase, Foxpro, Lotus 1-2-3, Procomm, etc., and also supports newer
32-bit applications using either the DPMI interface or the Phar Lap
"flat" address model. You can even run Windows as a task under TSX-32.
Each user can execute up to 10 simultaneous tasks and TSX can support
many simultaneous users (we have a site running 150 terminals on a
single 486). Unlike Unix, TSX installs on the same disk as DOS and uses
the same file structure as DOS so that you can alternate between
operating systems without reformatting or altering your disk in any way.
And, it supports most DOS commands so you have a very low learning
barrier. 4 MB is quite sufficient to run TSX with several active tasks.
8 MB would be appropriate for several users running several tasks each
(TSX has full demand paged virtual memory support). TSX also had a
TCP/IP networking option that allows you to connect multiple machines
for a combination multi-user/ multi-tasking/ distributed system.
Since I am one of the TSX-32 developers you can understand my
enthusiasm. There is a shareware version of TSX available that you can
try at no cost. It is limited to running 2 users but each user can have
10 simultaneous tasks and you can access it remotely via dial-in
connections. The shareware version is called TSX-Lite and the files you
should download are TSX_A.ZIP, TSX_B.ZIP, TSX_C.ZIP, and TSX_D.ZIP in
the Multitasking section of the IBMSYS forum library.

Well, this was an elder version. Recently, upon my inquery, I heard with
pleasure that TSX in not dead. Latest version came out 1. July 1998.
