AFAIR the .doc file contains a workaround for the problem above. Anyway,
IMO Trumpet's newsreader for DOS is not very uptodate: No Mime handling,
and first off no previous headerfetching.

If you need these features you have one real choice only.
ftp.acns.nwu.edu/pub/NUPOP
Nupop can fetch headers, handles Mime quite well, can accomodate viewers
for all type of files incl. HTML and even a browser (I included
Arachne), so it is a whole internet suite like Nettamer (but IMO a lot
better).

There are lots of other solutions, which are, however, not ready-made.
So you could use Martin Goebel's Getnews and Postnews utilities with his
reader prog, or the UKA_PPP package from Karl Heinz Weiss:
http/ftp://mvmpc9.ciw.uni-karlsruhe.de
I use this and am almost satisfied. (I'm sad having to say that my first
attempt to teach UKA_PPP to select headers using a utility make_get, has
failed. If I can manage it, this package will reach Nupop's level.)
Or you can use a KA9Q based solution like to find at the DEMON (british
ISP) ftp site: ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/ibmpc/apps (look for DIS22.EXE)
It's good for a first try and if you decide to use it regularly, you can
(and should) update/replace every item of the package.
All these are freeware. Another possibility would be Minuet with its
limited capabilities, as shareware for 50$.
