Seriously, isn't speech just audible text? I believe that several
programs for sight-impaired users have to work from ASCII files,
although I have to admit to having no experience with them.

No argument on that point. I am seriously disappointed at the upcoming
end of Deep Space Nine, and I still seriously miss Babylon 5 (haven't got
cable).
