Vitalspace web site opens

Today the byDesign E Lab team at the McLuhan Program in Culture
and Technology launches an interactive site of sites for
building civil society online. "It is now apparent that a global
economy has emerged, but the birth of a global civil society in
this digital era is by no means certain," said Dr. Liss
Jeffrey, founder of the E Lab. "That's why we decided to extend
our work in digital democracy and create a web portal site, a
kind of knowledge network to research and develop new media,
policies, and practices to support the growth of civil society."

At a live video conference and web cast, participants from
government, business and the Universities of Toronto, Ottawa,
and Harvard will review several projects innovated by students
and researchers from the E Lab, including:

- The Universal Access to Public Space Knowledge Base
   (sponsored by Industry Canada)
- Canada House Online (by Doug Tindal)
- The Independent Media Space project alt-culture.net
(with Gisela McKay, Aboriginal Voices and Gary Farmer,
Nettie Wild's Canada Wild Productions, and the Arts in
a Pluralist Society "Shifting Images" panel at
   Scarborough College)
- The Digital Democracy projects (Canada byDesign
   http://www.candesign.utoronto.ca, PanAm byDesign
http://www.panam-bydesign.net, the New Media and Human
Rights Workshop and Calgary Civil Society and Human
Security Round Table sponsored by the Canadian Centre
for Foreign Policy Development at DFAIT)
- Citizen Forum projects (CyberKitchenTable by George Irish,
the New Media Forum for the CRTC
   http://www.newmedia-forum.net, and a proposed Community
Learning Networks national consultation with HRDC)
