Helo,
I purchased a 340 MB maxtor hdd for $12 plus shipping, a friend found it
on E bay for me and helped me get it.
The computer I have is a 486 dx 2 / 50 mhz , I think I was lucky it worked
as easily as it did. I set the jumper to slave and pluged it in to the
midle ide conecter on the ribbon, and booted iin to press F1 to continue, or
del to enter setup.
I pressed del to enter setup, and in the storage selected hard disk 2, and
arrowed to auto, and pressed enter.
It didn't work!
I had to go in to a custome setup option for the hard drives and put in
cylinders 654 heads 16 sectors 63 and landing 0 I think that what the
numbers wore, and exit and save changes, and it booted OK.
The hard drive was whipped befor I got it, so I had to use fdisk and
create primary dos partission and format it.
It worked prety smoothly.
I was lucky some one found the drives cylender head and sector for me,
other wise I don't think I would have got it to work.
The cylenders heds sectors wore not listed on the drive, so I was real
lucky.
I didn't have to use disk maniger or do any thing like a low level format
or any thing like that.
I think the limit for a hard drive in dos was or is 540 MB, but am not
sure wheather this is a dos thing or a cmos thing.
Pete
