G'day all,

Here's a comment from a friend of mine who's been using DOS for several
years (and manages his business with DOS software). But he recently
bought a new computer with Win95 and IE4 to get on the Net (and so his
kids could run the latest games and such):

I went to print out the Nova Sgr 1999 finder chart, and
the stupid windows image and paint program would'nt even load their own
image files!! They kept on coming up with an illegal function message.

So I soon got sick of that, and loaded on (Neopaint) no problems there
after, neopaint made a great job of the chart.

You can put this one up on the DOS lovers page, talk about rediculous! it
takes an out of date DOS based program to do the job for the supposedly
superior windows.

And what was the format of the offending image? It was an 882x950
monochrome GIF. No problem with Arachne, Nettamer-386, or any of my
usual DOS image software. Strangely, Internet Explorer 4 for Win3.1
claimed the image had an invalid format.

Does IE assume all GIFs are 256 colours? If so, perhaps I should
include a notice on the Variable Stars website I maintain:

"NOTE - Internet Explorer users will require an image viewer that
*fully* supports the GIF specifications to be able to view these
star charts and lightcurves.

"CShow or Graphic Workshop on an IBM-XT should be sufficient."

:-)))))))))))

Of course, Microsoft do have a long history of adopting freely available
standards and "inventing" it in some flawed incarnation of their own.
Does IE5 also have a problem with mono GIFs?
