1. My first OS was MS-DOS 3.21.
2. Later, I used Windows 3.1, WFW 3.11, Windows 95, Linux, and MS-DOS
versions 5.0, 6.0, and 6.2; now I use PC-DOS 7.0 (with the Y2K patch) as my
primary OS.
The lure of GUIs was interesting, at first, just because (to me at the time,
anyway) anything new was exciting to try out. The mouse was fascinating and
the icons, and there was a lot of new software developed for the graphic
environment that appealed to the eye. Also, with the advent of the
World-Wide Web, it seemed almost a necessity to have a GUI browser.
But the more I worked with the GUI interface, the more I noticed that I
began to lose touch with the satisfaction of developmental computer
knowledge; that is, I felt less in touch with the computer interface with
pictures than I did with batch files and the basics of programing. So now,
the CLI has the greatest appeal to me and my greatest attention --
especially DOS, since that's most familiar to me. Linux is also a
challenging CLI OS, if you use it without the X-Window GUI. Linux has
appeal to me as a professional OS, while DOS remains the easiest,
friendliest CLI to work with on a PC level.
