I take exception to your suggestion that cross-linked files and FAT
problems were invented by Windows.

I suggest you review one of your older DOS troubleshooting manuals like
"The Norton Trouble Shooter, copyright 1988" - on page 57 you will find
a complete explanation on how to recover from cross-linked files and
lost chains.

The term cross linked files means having two files sharing the same
cluster of disk space. This type of problem is a fundamental one of the
FAT (file allocation table) system used in DOS.

Peter Norton developed his recovery ideas in the early XT-era on a
single sided floppy of 160 kilobytes - long before Microsoft invented
Windows by borrowing from everyone else who had a half-good idea or two.
