Hi all.

I recently gave my old 2400 bps internal modem to a friend with a IBM
386SX. This computer only had one com port so putting the modem on
COM2 was easy.

I dont know what it really is [it was given to me two years ago and
was my only modem for months until I had enough $$ to go buy a 33.6k
modem] but the MSIE3 dialler detected it as a 'CPI Viva Hookup 2400'
modem. It has a bank of five DIP switches for COM selection, and even
had a small table printed to show what. IIRC there was no other
markings except for somthing like "Made in Taiwan" or similar.

The curious thing is, if the other modem doesn't pick up the phone in
two rings, it gives up, hangs up and says busy. [Its really four
rings as our rings goes ring-ring ring-ring]. So it only connects
about 1 in 4 tries: even when hearing the ring noise. There has to be
one short ring first, then the double ring for it to connect.

The main problem is, the modems on the university's "ISP" only picks
up after two rings; thus giving the 1:4. Ringing up my (new 56K) ISP
has no problems since there is no rings before the handshaking tone.
[BTW I was expecting to get kicked with 2400; the ISP being unlimited
hours and everything but we stayed on for two hours chatting]

So my question is, Is there a init string or similar to set the
time-out to a longer delay or disable completely?

This friend has no real need for anything faster as he only wants to
do a little IRC and worked like a charm once connected. Plus he is a
uni student and doesn't have much money for computing.

[LOL all his house-mates have way better computers but no modems.]
