I am aware of several programs for Windows 9x that show you the
TCP/IP traffic. (port sniffers and ETC'). Cant remember where
I can find them, but a search for "port sniffer" might find something.
When running it, just look for any incoming/outgoing connectivity
to unknown addresses while browsing (ofcourse, connections that
you didnt asked for or expect to be made).
Ofcourse, they could do something like archiving the spyed data,
and then send it at a later time instead of all the time, or
it could used an unknown IP (which dont have to have an MS DNS),
but still, thats one way. Ofcourse, lets not forget the option
that maybe, just maybe they are NOT spying or anything..
(as illogical as it may when its from Microsoft)
