I think the companies were saying this (it's impossible) because
the video signal exiting out the video port is an analogue signal, not
digital, which would mean you'd need to incorporate some kind of
Character Recognitian technology. Now the requirements for this
unit shouldn't need to be as intensive as the CR found in modern
scanners (as it's all easily recognized printed text) but you'd need
to have it running in real-time and I don't know how fast current CR
runs at. IMHO, it would have been impossible back in '86 to do
this, now a days in might be a little expensive, but possible.
