I can vouch for this. Back in 1993 we had some really terrible
floods here in Kansas City. My son was busier than a cat in a
house full of mice that summer, replacing machines that people
thought were irreparably damaged by the water. Nothing would
convince them that all the machines needed was to be cleaned-up
from the mud and dried out. (Of course, perhaps the reason they
weren't convinced is because it was a very good excuse to upgrade
and in most cases insurance was paying for it - but that's
another issue. <grin>)

My son still has a very nice and large stash of parts he got that
summer because people wanted new machines and told him to dispose
of the old ones in whatever way was appropriate.

The exception was machines that were *on* when the water got to
them, and monitors seemed to suffer especially from this, which
is not surprising if you think about it. Machines and even
monitors that were off only needed to be dried out and most of
them worked fine. If you make sure things are absolutely dry
before putting them back together and firing them up, you should
have no problems. Also I have known *lots* people whose computer
systems were gleaned by "dumpster diving" at schools, large
office buildings, etc.

The only other thing I would say is that machines gleaned from a
situation like this will dry much faster if they can be opened up
and/or taken apart so the air can circulate freely.

Also, if you don't have access to an air compressor, most
electronics stores (at least here in the US) like Radio Shack
have "compressed air in a can" for sale, but I don't have any
idea how expensive it is.

I still like rubbing alcohol for cleaning keyboards though,
because as I said, it really cuts the dirt and requires very
little "elbow grease" on my part. Heck, I'm a woman and so I get
stuck with most of the cleaning around here anyway <grin> so I'll
do anything to make my job easier and faster.
