Hmm, what a koeenkeedeenkee. I just sent out a mail to a friend about
this. Mostly a bunch of what-ifs. I just might post it here and see
what folks think.

A couple of years ago I made an attempt at hooking up the HX to the
386. First I wanted to try out the Deskmate Workgroup Companion
but the executable locks up the HX (probably doesn't like the memory
card). I then tried NSLAN. That almost worked. I was able to send
messages to the 386 but when I sent a reply back, the HX would lock up
with a long beep tone.
One thing that was neat was the ability to run apps from the other
machine. I had the HX connect to the 386 and then run its copy of Minuet.
That experiment only lasted a couple of days before I called it quits.
This was all via the serial ports.
I got some pretty good input on the topic from the Tandy newsgroup at
that time.

There was a recent thread about null-modem cables in a networking
newsgroup and the consensus there was that parallel is better and
faster than serial. This HX does have an I/O card with two serial
and one parallel ports (one serial is disabled as I already have the
mouse connected to another port separate from the card).
Being an XT-class machine this computer exhibits some weird if not
fatal symptoms if I try and enable a third port.
The printer is hooked to the HX's built-in parallel port so the spare
parallel port (used for a Backpack 1.44 drive) is free for some PLIP
action maybe.

For true networking there are two options, a real NIC or one of the
parallel port ethernet adapters (pocket adapters).
NIC's claiming to be 8/16-bit autosense have always been common but
my problem was lack of funds (I'm one of America's non-working types).
Shoulda got one when I had the chance, anyway.
The pocket adapters are getting hard to find but they are/were rather
expensive.

Y'know, I've had a copy of Sitka's 10NET network software for years
and never had the chance to use it.
I just got a Linux box up and running after being Linux-less for some
months now. It's just begging to be networked with something. :-)
