Tried three DOS ICQ flavors tonight...

The first one is of course DOSMICQ.ZIP, David Lindauers'
first port to DOS. It's no longer available at Ladsoft site.
It's works smoothly on my 286, except for two bugs: it has
problem writing to log file, and it's nicest bug/feature
(IMHO): it allows you to add anyone _without_ his/her
authorization! ;-)

Caveat: To create a new UIN, make sure that the file MICQ.RC
doesn't exist both in your root directory and DOSMICQ dir.
Once created, you can edit MICQ.RC with any text editor. You
can do the following to your contact list: adding new UIN
(again, without approval ;), changing nickname, kicking
someone out, completely re-aranging, and so on.

The second flavor is the next generation of DOSMICQ, get
it at: http://members.tripod.com/~ladsoft/micq.htm
Log file bug has been fixed, but it still allows unauthorized
addition :) This version has nice multicolor display, but
limited to 80x25 text mode; it's unable to take advantage of
higher text mode resolutions. In addition, it has multisession
support with PKTMUX, the packet driver could be shared with
another _text-based_ DOS internet apps. Has anyone here ever
tried this "multitasking" capability?

The third flavor is David's own clone, LSICQ (LadSoft ICQ?),
available at: http://members.tripod.com/~ladsoft/icq.htm
It has authentication support. Looks better than DOSMICQ,
except that it won't allow me to use nick as alias for UIN;
quite annoying behavior (IMHO) -- or perhaps just a pilot
error? ;) Note: Config/contact list now stored in LSICQ.DAT
(also editable text file).

Both DOSMICQ NG and LSICQ has Random Group and Random Search
support. It's easier to pick new friends from ICQ database.
However, finding old friends could be a problem if you don't
remember his/her e-mail address, because that's the only search
parameter supported.

BTW, if your copy of Arachne was configured to use EPPPD.EXE
instead of PPPD.EXE, you could simply dial with Arachne then
shelling to DOS (ALT-E) to use DOS ICQ. Otherwise, you'll
have to configure Netdial first. All three flavors of DOS
ICQ won't work with PPPD.EXE (my favorite packet driver for
Arachne).

I wrote a simple batch file to launch DOS ICQ with Arachne
dialer (without have to run Arachne itself), basically just:

  miniterm (dialing)
  epppd (loading the packet driver)
cd dosmicq (switch to DOSMICQ dir)
  micq (launch DOSMICQ)
  cd.. (back to Arachne dir)
  termin 0x60 (terminate packet driver)

The batch file should be run from Arachne directory (in my
case, DOSMICQ installed at c:\arachne\dosmicq). To assure
hangup (sometimes termin failed), add the following line:

  comtool <portnum> ^h ATM1H1 ^cr ^t5 ATH ^cr^

Replace <portnum> with your modem's COM port number.

That's all, guys, just a brief observation... Any comments,
thoughts, bizzare experiences, dreams, whishes?

PS- All flavors of DOS MICQ came with full source code.
