"Plug and Pray" or "WinModems" are catrated modems, need a driver and
displace much of what the modem's harware work is, onto the CPU.

No good. Nothing worth (they are cheaper too) for than for just Win$.
Money thrown away.

Despite of the trouble to install eventually another card to have a
serial comport for it, an external modem definitely is best: you alway
see if/waht's going on, you can reset it independently from resetting
the whole machine - and you can cut it off when it's not needed.
