Bob,

I have watched the other replies to this subject, and I agree
(actually I rabidly agree) that external modems rule.

I will skip the obvious reasons, as the other guys have very
eloquently expressed those.

A more subtle reason is that for some reason internal modems,
especially of the PnP and Win/Lose variety, have more control
over the system bus (circuitry connected to the adapter slots)
than something as primitive as a modem ought to have.

I have had whole system configurations turn into Edgar Allen Poe
novels because of possessed internal modem cards. Conversely I
have solved baffling and obscure system configuration issues
by switching to external modems.

To be fair, not all internal modems originate in Hades, and some
are actually good and have sets of well-documented jumpers that
allow you to manually set Port and IRQ values. If it doesn't
have a "disable PnP" jumper set, it should be assumed to be
a creature of darkness and shunned.
