Great idea! :)
While the job could be handled manually, if the database
really grown to be "the world largest", (IMHO) sooner or
later it will become like Yahoo: High quality, but also
very hard to enter/update.

Another (better) reasons:
[Geeks] Easy way to find hard-to-find older 'puter
spare parts (yup, you've already mentioned this ;) --
or even better: finding collectibles like an original
PDP-11 in working order :-)
[Social] Providing cheap (or even almost free) hardware
to either individuals or organizations who can't afford
to buy the new one.
[Commercial] A classic reason: Moving something from
where it is in oversupply to another location where
it is not. Might require a solid international org
to achieve this, though (usually only viable in bulk
quantity). Otherwise, the database will only usable
locally (divided by countries), not internationally.
