DOS is very much still under copyright (doesn't it take several
decades before a copyright expires?). Now I doubt Microsoft would
be really upset over someone 'lending' a single copy of a six year
old version of an operating system they no longer develop (they're
even in the process of gutting the Win9x core, removing ALL
legacy 16bit DOS code),
Really, if you don't mind proceding in a slightly 'illicit' direction, I
think I saw a copy of the upgrade floating around on an
'abandonware' site a few months ago. You could check out some
sites off of the 'Abandonware Ring'
(http://www.surfsolutions.com/abandonwarering/). Mostly
old games, but there's a few sites that carry old apps (and OS's).
Abandonware IS copyright infringment, as technically the
copyrights still have decades to go before expiration, but not many
companies really much care about their 5/10/15 year old
games/apps that they don't even sell anymore. Your call.
