A few years ago I read a book titled 'The design of everyday things'.
It was pretty interesting, and covered the design of many things that
impact our lives, including computers and software.
For my programming day job, I rely on the SAA and CUA standards for
interface design. You can order books about them from IBM, or any book
store.
