HI, Guys,
PC-DOS 2000 is a commercial product, which you can order directly from IBM
or through any retailer or IBM hardware or software. It is not freeware,
and is not distributed through shareware channels. You might be able to get
somebody to zip up images of the three 720K disks on which PC-DOS 5.0 was
distributed, which could also be reorganized to go onto two 1.44MB 3.5-inch
floppy disks, and then they could attach them to E-mail messages.
I saved a copy by making a 1.44MB system disk bootable with PC-DOS 5.0, and
then made sure that in addition to the hidden files, command.com , sys.com ,
fdisk.com , format.com , and pkunzjr.com from the PKZip 2.04G distribution
were on the disk. The other files from the DOS directory got zipped into a
file called pcdos50.zip and coppied onto this floppy disk. That way, I
could store PC-DOS 5.0 onto one 3.5-inch 1.44MB floppy disk and easily put
it onto any PC with a drive that could read and write that disk format.
PC-DOS 7.00 and PC-DOS 2000 is distributed on five 1.44MB disks, with four
of those being formatted to a 1.7MB capacity--yes! you read that figure
correctly. PC-DOS 2000 is also available at a cheaper price from IBM on a
CD-ROM disk.
I will have to see if I still have that 1.44MB DOS 5.0 disk and if it is
still good. It also contains all the updates that came from IBM up through
April, 1993.
You may be able to find some disk images of IBM's older versions of PC-DOS
on some BBS systems. I think I even saw some disk images on IBM's own BBS
at one time.
The last time I priced PC-DOS 2000, the CD-ROM distribution was $55.00 and
the Floppy version was $60.00 (U.S. currency).
