You don't need any software, other than whatever drives the
modem to send fax messages out normally. If you have that, then
you have what I have. Here's how I do it:
1. Take a double adaptor and connect the telephone plugs from
both modem and fax machine to it. Plug it into the telephone
socket.
2. Set the fax machine to receive a manual fax message
immediately. The way to do this varies with the model. Mine has
an attached handset. I have to lift this, hear dialling tone,
then pres RECEIVE on the machine, which then takes over the line
from the handset and waits for the whistle from the transmitting
fax machine.
3. Now run your fax software. Tell it to dial a number that will
NOT be recognised by the exchange. I usually use 987 here. The
modem will send out the tones to dial that, but the fax machine
will (should!) ignore them. Then the modem will send out its
whistle and hopefully the fax machine will detect this and
handshaking will commence.
4. AT THIS POINT, remove the double adaptor from the telephone
socket, so that the fax machine and modem are still connected to
each other, but disconnected from the line. This stops any
recorded voice on the line (e.g., "The number that you have
dialled has not been recognised. Please hang up and try
again...") from upsetting the data.
You should see the message coming through from the modem on to
the fax machine. Remember to plug in whatever you need to plug
back into the telephone line when the caper has finished!
I should mention that I use BGFAX for DOS to send and receive
fax messages. I can't recommend it since it seems very buggy and
seems to have trouble sending more than one page at a time. I
suspect that any fax software will work so long as it doesn't
wait for ringing tone and an answer before it looks to do the
handshaking with the receiving fax machine.
By setting the modem to "immediate answer" mode and putting a
sheet in the fax machine to send, you can use a very similar
process to scan images into your PC.
Well - that's how it works for me. Hope it helps!
Ron.
