Thanks to those who tried to help.

The problem is indeed with access to newdar.   At least I am now generating error
messages on newdar console saying that it has denied a connection from the client
newt.

Only problem is that the micro-linux that I used to put up X on that old machine
doesn't have a copy of xhost - and for some reason copies that I put on it
from elsewhere don't run - probably a file structure problem there.

Any idea what the file is that xhost creates under a typical Slackware dist?  I'm
running Xdenu on newdar and Xdenu looks to be Slackware-based.

I think I need to try popping a CD drive into newdar and see if it will set up 
Slackware
even with only 4 MB - a full distribution couldn't hurt compared to this admirable, but
limited, Xdenu.
