With serial connections the length and sort of the wire is
much less important than in faster parallel connections.
I don't have the numbers off the top off my head, but I'll
look them up.
For serial connections you could use null modem cables to
connect COM ports, or regular telephone line to connect
modems.
Much faster though would be connecting printer ports
(cheap, easy to find) with laplink cables and running the
TCP/IP over the PLIP packet driver. Cable lengths are
rather limited though.
