Try client business applications for DOS (yes, I said it, DOS). The OS
is cheap or free (e.g., OPEN or DR DOS), is 32-bit (these days with
any of several extenders).
And there are a world of client applications already written for it, most
of them free -- browsers (e.g., arachne,) spreadsheets, word processors,
graphics programs, media players, schedulers, mail/news programs ---
etc. etc. Most of these programs work great, are vastly more efficient
in terms of the source code (many written in assembler) and the hardware/
software, memory, disk space required.
Only one small problem: microsoft and the GUI invaders are try to make new
PCs and workstations incapable of running this OS any more.
