Good writing habits should not be entirely sacrificed to the whims of Internet slang. But slang exists, nonetheless, and we have to cope with it. Let's hope that common e-mail dialogue (certainly colloquial, to say the least) will never displace the dignified status of formal discourse and composition. The quality of language in lists and other virtual discussion areas doesn't concern me -- as long as it stays there. Under those circumstances we need informality, in most cases (as we do in the SurvPC list). On the other hand, it's troubling to see poor sentence structure and punctuation -- improper comparative constructions (a special peeve of mine) -- steadily making their way into public places of expression. I haven't followed the Dictionary People (whoever they are) very closely, but I hope they remain vigilant in preserving tasteful language and new word inclusions -- in much the same way that we attempt to cherish and preserve the best of old technology -- before it slips through our fingers forever...
