What I've been trying to figure out is, at one time, I think, the standards about how Internet server and client programs should work were determined by RFC's. This included email, usenet, FTP, etc. But, apparently, at least 2 common types of applications, 1) Instant Messaging, and 2) Telephony, are completely proprietary, so that one program can't communicate with the other.
