I'm not sure what exactly you mean here. Most distributions of Linux can be
had for free, or for $2US if you want a CD. And Debian is certainly well
suited for a small configuration, although X certainly ups the requirements
for disk and memory. If you can do something useful with a box (ie network
probe) then it's worth finding an OS to use it. The great thing about Debian
is that you can do a minimal (10 diskette) install, then just add on what
you need. With a reasonable Internet connection, it's great!

I'd worry most about memory, then disk. After all, you can run a system off
floppy boot with no HD and still do useful things running from a RAM disk.
Of course, more disk, more memory and more CPU is always a good thing!

Well, X but not much in the way of apps! Use it as an X terminal I guess.
