I wasn't talking "absolute minimum". My 486dx33 is running a
"practical" X system. It even runs Netscape (bloated pig) at
an acceptable speed.

PB-> and to get the most out of it I would recommend at least
PB-> a lot more of harddisk space.

Linux + swap + X + wm + Netscape all fit on my 80meg HDD.
Why would I need a lot more?

PB-> It is not really worth buying any of the Linux or BSD
PB-> distributions

Linux is not expensive. CDs are available for $2 or it can be
downloaded for free.

PB-> for other SurvPC's than the newer ones,

CLI Linux is an excellent option for old 386s (with 8meg RAM).
They make excellent servers, routers, firewalls, Xterms, etc.

SD-> a couple of two-floppy distributions come with X included
PB-> I think I have missed them, where?

There's muLinux (which I have used) and one called Xdenu
(or something like that).

Cheers,
Steven
