A previous post asked for evaluations and descriptions of alternatives
to progman.exe, for windows 3x.

I have tried most of the major alternatives to progman.exe including:

        calmira dosbar
        stilleto windows hajime
        winbar infobar
        toolbar pilot

What I found with the progman replacements that saved memory
and resources were not as convenient. Usually this is because they used
text menues rather than icons to save GUI resources. The programs that
offerred more convenience than progman, such as dosbar and calmira used
up more memory and resources than program.exe.

In the end, I found the best combination of efficiency and convenience
to be progman.exe itself -- configured in a certain way. I reduce the program
manager window to a small size, about the size of an ordinary group
window. I then maximize group groups, as needed, so a group window completely
overlaps the program manager window. The result is like turning the
pages of a book: At any time only one small window is visible on
the screen, and I can see icons and pick an application to launch in
a small number of keystrokes:

Ctrl-F4 reduce currently visible group window to an icon
Left-Click x maximize a new group window, within the program window
Douple click Start an application within the current group window

Since I never have a lot of group windows with a lot of icons showing
on the screen at the same time, I do not use up many GUI resource memory.
Since the program window is small, I can see the icons of currently
active programs on the bottom of the screen -- just like using the
taskbar of windows 95.
