Oh, of course! Sounds like they are COM ports. If you've got "extra" cards,
you could always yank a UART out of one (assuming it's identifiable) and
make the mouse work on the other one. THAT should kill the damned thing!

I'd pursue the modem. Most can be set to something that'll cooperate with
COM1: COM2: on board.
