I use a program called BGFax, written by a guy named BJ Guillott. It's
primarily to use with a BBS, so I can recieve faxes on the same system
that I use for my BBS. To be used that way you need a modem capable of
"adaptive answering," that is, able to switch off automatically between
receiving faxes and recieving data calls. But if you're using it to
only recieve faxes, 'bout any fax modem'll work.
As for your 386, I've got it running on a 286-12 at work -- which is
actually a speed-up card running on an old 8086. So it -will- run on
your hardware, most likely.
If I'm remembering the URL correctly, it's:
<http://www.blkbox.com/~bgfax>
I also host the tech support maillist for BGFAX off of my BBS. Good
luck.
