But we still need drivers for it, so it's just like any other graphics
library. (Direct Draw/3D are graphic libraries that either use software or
hardware (well, Direct Draw can only use software even if the card has
hardware support for things according to a friend of mine)). VESA is IMHO
much better since more cards support it. (And most of the libraries already
have support for it anyway).

Neither do I ;)
But I do know that you'll need a graphics library when you want to use
graphics (or code it all yourself), what we need if we want to use OpenGL
is a library that has support for OpenGL.

Sorry, I don't know that much about it... (and it's time to eat anyway - my
sister thinks I'm a lot like "Winnie the Poo" (correct spelled?) since we
both think of food first of all <VBG>)
BTW: Does everyone understand what a "library" is in this context?
