Hello again, folks...

At last, I can join you with a true survivor PC specimen: an IBM PS/1, 286
CPU running at 10 mHz, a color VGA monitor, single 1.44 MB FDD, 30 MB HDD,
and a 2400 bps internal modem. I installed a discarded set of PC DOS 7,
which I upgraded with IBM's y2k Fix Pak -- but the BIOS needed no help, as
this machine was built (back in 1990 with a 1989 BIOS) as a y2k ready
computer! I'm also very fortunate that the previous owner kept this
beauty in perfect condition and used it very little; I was going to vacuum
out the inside, but discovered that it was virtually dustless. Apparently,
this guy had kept it under something like a plexiglass cover. He *gave*
it to me, since he had finally "upgraded" to a more modern Pentium-class
computer and couldn't find anyone who wanted it.

Of course, for me, it's a special treasure of the past with which I can
happily experiment. It's surprising how quickly these older machines can
operate with the proper software and configuration... it only has 640 k of
conventional memory and 384 k of extended memory, yet with SMARTDRV
using this extended memory along with other configurations, I've still got
about 589 k of free conventional memory.

The original software was PC DOS 4, and it has a small version of that
stored in a ROM chip. Ordinarily, it would boot up into a "quad screen"
that allowed for going directly to Microsoft Works 4 (for DOS), the DOS
Shell, a reference section, or a personal section of directory "folders".
When installing PC DOS 7, I opted to disable this and boot directly from
the hard disk.

For my Internet connection and e-mail, I'm using Net-Tamer (the XT/286
version), and in conjunction with that, I'm using an old WordStar-like
editor (I have WordStar 4 on it, but want a quicker, lighter editor for
use with Net-Tamer) of Digital Research that's simply called "Editor"; it's
only 35 k in size.

Although I can do limited text browsing with Net-Tamer and e-mail with
2400 bps, it looks like I'll stick with just sending e-mail -- it takes
much too long to download large e-mail files.

Anyway, are there any other PS/1 users on the list? Any resources
(other than IBM) that anyone knows about?
