Perhaps you mean a fossil driver?  This is a necessity for most,
if not all BBS's, and also LAN's (I think)-

Another lovely acronym brought to you by scientists and
military personnel everywhere:

(F)ido - (O)pus - (S)eadog - (S)tandard - (I)nterface - (L)ayer
 F        O        S          S            I             L

This is a generic modem driver that performs roughly the same
function as the TCP/IP stack.
