The optical mouse, at least the kind that used a mirrored mouse-pad
etched with a fine grid, has been used by high-end manufacturers (SGI,
Sun) for years. I am not a big mouse user, and have only used one briefly.
It belonged to a graphics designer who swore by them. His only problems
were that the little Teflon(tm) feet wore off - he used it so heavily, and
one that fell in a fishbowl.

I saw an announcement about a newer mouse that did not need a special
mouse-pad, yet still worked optically. Never tried one, but I suspect
it is expensive, and may still be buggy (new technology).

The older optical mice live up to the theory that if you can eliminate
moving, mechanical parts, you eliminate problems. Just don't forget the
special mouse-pad.
