I think the ones with the thick pad (1/2 to 1 inch), about the same size
as a sheet of paper (8-1/2x11 up to large drafting table), are called
digitizing tablets. The "mouse" has a thin coil about 1 to 1-1/2 inches
in diameter with a "cross-hair" in the middle. This senses the precise
position relative to the coils in the tablet.
These are useful for tracing maps or drawing coordinates into a
computer. Usually, a thin cable connects the mouse to the tablet, and
the tablet connects to a serial port on the computer. I suppose some
have battery-powered Infrared or Radio Frequency links instead.
The optical mouse-pads I have seen are simple mirrors, about 1/8 inch
thick, of glass or polycarbonate, with a fine grid etched on one surface.
The optical mice were slim three-button mice with LED/phototransistor pairs
instead of balls.
