We are not the only ones with doubts, that the progress really is progress, this is
from a 78.r.p.m collectors list;
">I've been through all you describe in the past, and it's gotten easier over
>the past couple of years.
I'm not so sure...it is easier if things work as planned, but when they refuse
to do so (i.e, "Plug and Play" doesn't") it's much harder to correct. By the
time I could identify my sound card problem as a stillborn AWE64, it was long
since off warranty! Part of the problem is we expect hardware and software to
do a lot more; my old 286 sits over in the corner and runs dBASE III+ whenever
I tell it to (it has 1-2-3 v2.? and WP 5.1 as well, and both work fine for
everyday tasks) and even though I had to reset it to 1/1/2000 it's worked
fine ever since. Of course, it can't even run Windows 3.1, so the screen isn't
very pretty (can't even install a 3.5" floppy drive, since the BIOS never
heard of such a thing) but I can type and print a letter, create a simple
spreadsheet, or keep track of a database...even create programs using QBASIC.
On the other hand, the 486, ever since I installed a second HD, now thinks
there is a non-system disk in drive A, even when drive A is empty, every
time I restart it; as well, Win 3.x apps don't give back all their memory,
so I can run about 2-3 days between General Protection Faults (and the books,
of course, don't admit to this...did you know there is a registry in 3.x
which when corrupted elimanates all your carefully created file associations?
I didn't until last Monday!) Meanwhile, the Pentium now runs under Win98,
which I regard as akin to voodoo...it works (most of the time) but I dunno
how or why! In my opinion, we're headed for a world in which you can no
longer fix anything you own...in fact, quite often it wasn't MEANT to be fixed...
that is to say, a world full of mysterious "black boxes" which the technician
pops out and replaces with another one, and then hands you a bill for more
money than you ever saw or heard of!"
And a follow up;
"> so I can run about 2-3 days between General Protection Faults (and the books,

win or system.ini ....
a simple, plain ASCII file. can be edited under Dos, compared to that
f***ing registry of Win 95 and its successors.
Win 3.1 is running since about 450 days without any troubles compared to
the necessary bimonthly reinstall of Win95. "
I scrapped Windows95 when I upgraded my Pentium to a AMD KIII 400MHz, Windows95 would
only run in 16 colours and to reinstall it I would have to slow down the
processor to below 300 MHz. Not worth the trouble in my opinion, even though I miss
the possibility to play *.vqf. Windows 3.0 handles even my AGP-card without any
problems, which OS/2 does not, probably because the card is to cheap to be good.
I too have a SoundBlaster, in Windows95 it always sounded terribly, in DOS, OS/2 and
Linux it is not that bad. OS/2 ver 3 does not have plug and play, still it always found
the hardware Windows95 could not find.
