Thanks Gunnar!  I did see that *after* I had made the post.  I won't be
using it (at least not yet) since I've already got the Linux LaTeX up and
running. Not much time to practice coding up some docs, yet.  I've just
compiled some existing .tex files to see if my basic installation was
working correctly.  It seems to be fine.

I got started on all of this because I am using the command line more and
more and want to do some of my regular work there.  I've also got a a few
repetitive layout tasks that are rather tedious to do with WYSIWYG word
processors but which will, I think, be greatly streamlined (and the
results more consistant) if I use something like LaTeX - maybe with some
PERL scripts.

The more I read, the more interested I am in learning to do some GOOD
typesetting on computers...  My (now deceased) grandfather was a
traditional typesetter and I have very early memories of going to the shop
with him.  That must have something to do with it...
