The first optical mouse I saw was running on an IBM XT back in about 1983 /
1984. It was part of the VisiOn system, made by the VisiCalc people, which
was a "Windows before Windows". The mouse required a mouse pad with the grid
on it, and the entire ystem came with a spreadsheet (VisiOn Calc) plus
wordprocessor and database.

I think what killed VisiOn was that fact that software development had to be
done on a Vax minicomputer as the XTs didn't have the capacity.

A little bit of ancient history for the young 'uns....
