Vj compression is an algorithm used to compress IP packets since their
headers don't differ so much each other. Packet size can be  changed in
order to best fit your connection type. Telnet session gain a lot of
benefit (mainly on slow lines) from VJ compression since ONE packet is
sent for each keystroke! On XT machine VJ compression may be not a good
idea since VJ algorithm must be run for each packet sent. FTP section
don't gain so much from VJ compression (I assume you are downloading zip
files) but from large packet size. Surely you will able to connect your
machine (x286) also without VJ compression at 56K.
