Yes, I actually did get to try a NeXT computer, not too long after
their launch. It was an elegant-looking machine, but it did have a
number of problems.
1. Speed
2. Speed
3. Speed
4. Reliability
The NeXT was a great design concept, but it just didn't work
because the hardware was insufficient for the task. Like the very
early 128KB Macintoshes, there really wasn't enough memory to
do much. Also, since the screen and printer were both rendered in
PostScript, it took quite a while for the screen to update,
sometimes. Finally, the only storage device that was available was
the removeable optical cartrige. The storage on it was great for the
time - 128MB(Not sure) but it was just so _slow_ I thought that
instead of an optical disk, there had to be a tape unit in there. And
the optical disk was always cranky - sometimes you had to insert
and eject it a couple of times for it to read properly. :/
I do know that the NeXT computer I used is still around; it's on the
shelf in the IT dept. of the University I went to at the time.
