I usually make the faster machine the server (Sometimes the slower
machine won't work as a server.)  YMMV, of course.

I usually use this line in config.sys for mine when using parallel
cables (4-6 times faster than serial so that's usually!):
Device=c:\Dos\Interlnk.Exe /Auto /NoPrinter
