Hi listers,
Here is another interesting spam article from the same source as the
one I posted recently.

And now for today's tip ...
SAM SPADE, DETECTIVE
By Robin Garr
If you prefer to make your battle against email spammers more close-up and
personal than merely hitting the Delete key or getting involved with
legislative efforts by groups like CAUCE (discussed in my last tip), one
effective approach is to report spammers to their Internet Service
Providers.
(Replying to the spammer directly, whether with a well-reasoned
intellectual argument or well-chosen blast of invective, is not
effective, unfortunately. In most cases, "spam" comes from faked email
addresses, meaning that your blast will toast only innocent bystanders; in
some cases, spammers take your reply as proof that your address is a live
one, and they add it to the lists they sell to other spammers. The result?
MORE junk mail.)
But tracking down the perpetrator's real address in a well-crafted
piece of spam can be difficult. You'll need some basic tools, such as
the "TRACE" batch file mentioned in a recent tip...or you can hire a
detective.
Try Sam Spade.
An "integrated network query tool" for Windows 95, 98, 2000, and NT4,
Sam Spade is described as "a general-purpose Internet utility package, with
some extra features to help in tracing the source of spam and other forms of
Internet harassment." The current version 1.14 is freeware, available from
http://www.samspade.org/ssw/
A 1.75-megabyte download, it uses the standard Windows installation
program. It takes a little knowledge of Internet networking to set
up--you'll have to find, and enter, your provider's default server
name, for instance, but the instructions tell you how. Once it's
running, all you have to do is copy in an email or Web site address,
or the header information from a suspect piece of mail, and Sam Spade
will run up to 20 checks, using public records to identify a host,
determine if it's online, report the owners and operators of Internet
Service Providers and Web sites, and, best of all for spam-tracking,
provide an automated email header analyzer that will "parse" (sort
through) email header information and give you a plain-English report.
Detective Spade may not always get his man, but he's a good sleuth to
have on your side.
