IT'S QUARTER-PAST LINUX

By Robin Garr

In the religious wars of the computer world, it is hard to find more
ardent evangelists than those of the First Church of Linux. (And take
it from a guy who recently helped set up a Linux-based Web server:
Learning that arcane code has a great deal in common with mumbling
altar-boy Latin.)

But even by this standard, the news from the recent LinuxWorld confab
in San Jose seems a little over the top: The folks at Big Blue, IBM,
plan to market a WRISTWATCH with a Linux operating system.

Not just a simple timekeeper, the IBM Linux watch will check email,
surf for stock prices, maintain a phone directory...and dial your cell
phone.

Don't hold your breath if you want to be the first geek in your
neighborhood to have one, though. The LinuxWorld model was only a
prototype, and IBM says it's a year or two away from commercial
production.

Battery life is one factor, the company says.

But from what I know about Linux, I expect IBM is still trying to find a
simpler way to tell the time than having to enter "rcheck -USR1 timeofday
/var/run/watch.pid" from the command line.
